Jesus knew that his mission was now finished, and to fulfill Scripture he said, “I am thirsty.” A jar of sour wine was sitting there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put it on a hyssop branch, and held it up to his lips. When Jesus had tasted it, he said, “It is finished!” Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. John 19:28-30
How can such an awful event as this be remembered around the world as “Good Friday”?
It is the day that brought hope to our fallen world!
All of us used to live that way, following the passionate desires and inclinations of our sinful nature. By our very nature we were subject to God’s anger, just like everyone else. But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much, that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!)
Ephesians 2:3-5
Because of His great love for us, Jesus offered up His perfect self as the Passover Sacrifice for our sin, once for all, the Lamb without blemish.
And because of this, we are not only saved from a life of sin, and have a sure promise and certain hope of eternity in heaven when we receive this great gift by faith, but are adopted into His own Royal Family!
So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, “Abba, Father.”
Romans 8:15 NLT
And…
But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.
1 Peter 2:9
So we agonize on Good Friday with Jesus, remembering His suffering for us – fallen humanity. Because of that, we rejoice with abandon on Easter Sunday when we celebrate His resurrection from the dead, proving Himself to be God, and able to fulfill His promises!
“For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 NLT
If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved.
Romans 10:9-10 NLT
You can do this right now, where you are. I would love to hear about it.
